Results after recent and coming elections everywhere
My Canada has been quiet for some time recently. Maybe it is just weariness from watching depressing news reports on every media and social network that are ripe with speculation and mostly personal opinions. Transversely it is more likely writers’ block that has been in our forefront for several months. It could be aging, news depression results or almost anything. Hopefully the mood will pass with the onset of winter and more of a desire to sit at the computer and type rather than going places.
MY CANADA will begin with comments on recent and upcoming elections. The new provincial Conservative government of Doug Ford is the most recent disaster. In an attempt to nullify the unpopular Liberal party of past years Ford and his government have almost completely alienated swing voters that were his reason for being elected. Moving the sex education formulas in schools from recent progressive status back into 1990 years will undoubtedly prove disastrous as parents, teachers and school administrators, to mention just those immediately affected, will undoubtedly swing votes in another direction pressuring Ford to at least think things over.
Allowing turban wearers mostly used by Muslims to motorcycle without helmets is certainly about to cause a great deal of controversy and probably much more. How can police charge a person riding without a helmet while those in turbans without proper protection are free to operate side by side with bikers? Pity the poor police services unless saner heads surface.
Now to the cannabis legalization situation that is swamping the media and even displacing a great deal of the ongoing Trump media coverage. Every political party appears to be more interested in creating controversy aimed at possible future vote getting by trashing the opposition parties rather than governing as voters formerly expected. A segment of the population has been using pot as long as anyone can remember and much of the use created graduating to stronger drugs. That is the main worry in some opinions. Instead political Canada is using it as a way to attack everything current governments are doing rather than suggesting sensible easily accepted changes to make the inevitable use of marijuana better controlled. Many older people don’t use and never did use the particular drug. That probably cannot be said of younger people. But then there is the question of underage drinking, prescription drug use for all age groups and a myriad of other problems much more prevalent than using recreation pot . Sure the people intent on making money on distributing marijuana will likely increase but if it’s not pot it will be something else such as stronger drugs so now is the time to just handle the effects of cannabis legalization.
Finally a comment on what some might categorize as the American disaster called Donald Trump. A great many supporters seem willing to overlook the drastic changes the president has brought about to the formerly prestigious office of president. The 2015-16 election result involving a slim majority of most Americans is the reason for his election. The rest of the country and most other nations of the world don’t appear as supportive but on the other hand it is the business of American voters not those in other counties. Every nation must deal with its own election results and other countries can only offer opinions as long as democracy still exists which might be under scrutiny if not attack recently.
