A crumbling Harper dynasty in on the horizon?

The 2013 Conservative Party of Canada gathering of the faithful otherwise referred to as a convention is all over. Most Conservative and nothing but Conservatives in Canada cheered the leader even though Prime Minister Harper neglected to explain why the head of the party as an initial Senate act appointed two journalists with undying loyalty to the party as Senators. Especially since the PM has always been an advocate of Senate abolishment. It was probably because the other party has always appointed senators for similar reasons and of course both parties are learning two wrongs never make it right. The appointees along with a representative appointment of a First Nations party worker from an isolated Region of Quebec/Labrador region are all accused of wrongdoing that the PM praised at various times. Harper is unbelievably blaming the opposition for standing in the way of disciplining those three appointees accused but not convicted of wrongdoing if media reports can be believed.

More and more as the PM’s term in office rolls on comparison is easily made to the direction the American Republican Party Tea Party sector reported to be trying to scuttle the US Health Care reforms that is such a strong part of Canadian culture.

It will be interesting to see in the long term whether Stephen Harper’s shaky majority government can survive. The media is currently praising the results of the 2013 convention stating it has solidified the party base support for the PM. More than the party base was needed for the last majority vote and by all indications the Liberal base that wandered away due to the similar sponsorship scandal and party divisions over ideology is quickly returning to support Justin Trudeau’s ascension to the leadership.

Even with some stellar performances in the House of Commons during recent Question Periods Thomas Mulcair’s   leadership of the New Democratic Party doesn’t currently appear to be able to hold the strong Quebec vote that made the party the Official Opposition. Mulciar it seems can still depend on the traditional NDP vote but recent news reports indicate there might be some dissatisfaction with his leadership. The discontent would not be surprising with the strong labour union decline in power and the fact Mulcair was a Quebec Liberal Party minister before changing parties and ascending to the NDP leadership.

The Senate debacle currently underway and the ongoing battle between Stephen Harper using his PMO to attack and at times try to control the national media could topple the current majority government. In the past decade, at least until the Gomery inquiry, Canada has always preferred to elect a minority government and now voters have the media named Senate scandal to contend with before the next election in 2016.
