Sexual assault and living circumstances

As a result of the country’s media being overcome with reporting the American election and the Donald Trump ascension to America’s throne of power My Canada has been resting from making comments. That is except to say if the election happened in any other country in the world news reports would never have been so intense. It was almost as if Canada was a part of the U.S. Of course the succession of Canada’s sovereignty will hopefully never happen even during the reign of President Donald Trump.
However there are more important issues to discuss regarding Canadian activities. An important one is the Quebec situation with regard to accusation of police officers sexual assaulting Indigenous women near Rouyn Quebec. All charges have been dropped after an apparently thorough review of the cases by the Montreal Police internal activity investigative unit. Although circumstances surrounding the Montreal Police investigation have not been made public there isn’t any indication, at least in the press outside Montreal, regarding the depth of investigation. It is unlikely any of the suspected victims were interviewed by investigators.
The fact one police service investigated the actions of another in the same province or for that matter located anywhere else in the country leads to cover-up suspicions. However the practice is used and sanctioned across the country so Quebec in this case isn’t any different. The solution is as plain as the women across the country pushing for sexual assault recognition and enforcement getting involved. We are privy to cases of women being assaulted to different degrees in a variety of circumstances everywhere from government departments to corporate board rooms and almost every other place men and women work or play side by side. It’s a fact Indigenous women living in circumstances overlooked as unsavory by society are regularly subject to sexual assault, exploration or any other form of male control. The fact a young woman is plied with alcohol and drugs then sexually assaulted in a class hotel room by someone she agreed to be with for a night of “fun” isn’t any different than an Indigenous woman under the influence of the same type of alcohol or drugs being offered a ride home or picked up for being drunk and as many claim raped. Circumstances in each case might be vastly different but the action against the women is similar if not exactly the same.
If sexual assault, rape and every other form of unwanted sexual activity is to end then every case regardless of circumstance surrounding the victim must be recognized. Every victim is someone’s daughter, wife, sister or other family member. Why should life circumstances dictate the reason for prosecuting the person victimizing the victim?
Maybe the Rouyn police officers are unjustly accused in all the cases brought forward. On the other hand it is possible the fact that the situation happens regularly and could set off an uncontrollable reaction the ever increasing power of Indigenous citizens could clog the courts with unsolved accusations of sexual exploitation by police officers and Quebec might not be the only source for accusations.
