DEMOCRACY IS LIKELY UNDER THREAT

My Canada is back with four discussion items tentatively on the agenda. First are issues related to the various political situations that are causing turmoil and have changed North America to an extent most older people at least are unhappy with but have little chance of changing. Next are two items may people must deal with as they age including hearing and teeth problems. The final item is about the years of problems First Nation communities have dealt with but are now beginning to find a very limited degree of change. The Indigenous people flight will take a full commentary to deal with so maybe it should and will be left for another My Canada session.
Let’s begin with the discomfort almost everyone everywhere is feeling due to the American gun out-of-control situation. The most recent Pittsburgh synagogue murders of innocent people attending religious service are as everyone claims absolutely inexcusable. Although President Trump is leading the demand to make certain the perpetrator receives the death penalty killing the man will not solve the problem or bring back the eleven people that died. The greatest way for Trump to really serve his nation would be to begin an American movement to modify gun ownership. The most logical would be outlaw private possession of combat rifles that most people regardless of the firearm usage do not need to own for target practice except possible under strict rules, even banning private possession. But until his tenure runs its course or Americans finally decide to get rid of him in another way the status quo and much more silliness, just as Trump wants, will be media material.
But really such action is not likely to happen while Donald Trump has such control over everything he imagines as his right. That is not the way the Americans dealt with their own people in the past. Sure you can find items that many people were not happy with while both Democratic and other Republican Presidents were in power. However, few if any of the almost four dozen Presidents since America became a respected nation after 1776. Trump leadership is a frightening scenario which will likely became ever worse if Americans decide to extend the majority mandate of his political Republican party which at least stalled with the early November mid-term vote. Maybe democracy doesn’t last much longer as past history records. The two hundred years democracy survives so far seems to tell the story about America in the near future. From 1776 when the country became a democracy to 2018 is less than fifty years more than the two hundred years history records for any democracy life span. Only time will tell since change is inevitable and maybe the lifespan of democracy will change too.
Back to MY CANADA and a couple of major problems facing citizens as aging increases and people are around longer. Two things invariably happen while aging. One is hearing loss but that is often offset by dental problems causing people to require hearing aids and dentures. Cures to handle both are easy to access and if a person has strong insurance coverage can usually be handled. The cost is offset by such coverage but not eliminated and even with that help can still be expensive. Many seniors are not in a position financially to deal with the heavy cost of the needed items so unless government either regulates the price audiologists and dentures are allowed to charge rising health costs from not treating the two problems profit as usual will continue to supersede the needs of lower income citizens. Elected officials should without a doubt stop the unending political debating and get back to legislating solutions to current problems.
