MY CANADA without Trump includes Canadian issues this week

Picture
My Canada has been on sabbatical primarily because the only news affecting the country usually revolves around POTUS Donald Trump. The majority of Canadians, according to some recent polls, believe Trump is not now nor will he ever be more than a detrimental influence on Canada. Attacks on Bombardier, the agriculture sector, cross border problems with regard to refugees and the list continues are indicators of the Trump sway on this country.

There are issues that do not directly refer to America Trump that a percentage of Americans still strongly support. Although not a respected political figure in many or most countries, at least according to media reports, Trump supporters seem willing to let world opinion on the traditionally reference of the ugly American fester and gain momentum. World changes are inevitable and like it or not the 2016 American election of the current president is one of those changes.

My Canada does have important changes to comment upon led by the decline lately in the Trudeau Liberal dynasty. There is an expectation in most quarters for a government losing popularity after ruling for half the current mandate and Justin Trudeau is apparently not an exception. Cartoons and opposition parties claim the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree in reference to Justin’s governing compared to his father Pierre. Some have even speculated perhaps the young Trudeau is more inclined to reflect his mother Sinclair brand rather than father Pierre’s type of rule. Who knows; maybe in a couple of years Justin will take a walk in the snow like Pierre did to contemplate the younger Trudeau's next political move.

The greatest unknown quantity or quality in Canadian politics at this time is the next leader of the New Democrats. Will the result of member voting after October 1st reflect Charlie Angus and his strong support of Indigenous communities or Jagmeet Singh as the third party leader?  If Singh wins the leadership how will that affect the growing Muslim, Sheikh population in Canada and will it reflect the beginning of a different more Asian oriented political climate in Canada?

The recently elected Progressive Conservative leader Smiling Andrew Scheer, according to recent polls at least, seems to be gaining popularity at the expense of PM Trudeau. His political direction to date is not much different to the Harper dynasty which only lost by a slim margin in the 2015 federal election. Rocketing from third place to winning a majority in 2015 Trudeau’s Liberals might want to find some popular legislatives goodies for the electorate before the next election. If the past election results were any indication it wouldn’t take much of shift to the right for Scheer to smile his way into power. Trudeau using his parliamentary majority has introduced some unpopular measures not only the opposition but the government friendly media are questioning. The PM with some strong ministers doing a good job in some tricky portfolios related to dealing with Trump unpredictable direction probably has a good chance of reversing the present popularity trend and winning another term. Who know what the future in Canadian politics will bring. A minority parliament which is sometimes Canadian reality is one possibility.

The next item is Canadian but more reflective of the municipality of Espanola which also reflects MY Canada. The current council elected in 2015 on the promise of listening to voters before instituting unpopular issues has slipped somewhat in this first term. Instituting a new waste or garbage system without actually calling a public meeting is not the promise made before the last election. There is little doubt the changes dictated will be instituted and the fact pressure from the province is a great deal of the criteria for the change. However council has not changed direction as promised by making certain objections to proposed changes in town legislation is thoroughly aired. Telling people to attend council meetings if they want to have input reflects exactly the criteria these council members opposed the previous council for doing while irritating the electorate.  It might create a problem when electioneering begins for the next term.

One last item Espanola council might consider is the town police using the Sudbury Star to inform the public about police actions with regard to mostly domestic disputes in the town. Most reflections to outsiders about the Town of Espanola is the municipality as one of the most idyllic towns in the area. Police reports such as those recently published in the big city’s widely circulated newspaper certainly doesn’t reflect positively.
